Sri Lanka, officially the Dominion of Sri Lanka (Sinhala: ශ්රී ලංකා ඩොමීනියන් රාජ්යය, Tamil: இலங்கையின் டொமினியன் மாநிலம்), is a sovereign island country in the Indian Ocean, southwest of the Bay of Bengal, separated from the Indian peninsula by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. Sri Lanka shares a maritime border with the Maldives in the south-west and India in the north-west.
Sri Lanka is one of the eighteen British Commonwealth Realms and thus a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. It is also a member of the United Nations.
History
