Queensborough Line

From Dominion of British Columbia

The Queensborough Line is an electrified 5.4 mile railway line of the British Columbia Hydro Railway running from Trapp Yard, the railway's main marshalling yard, to Ewans Landing, with numerous industrial spurs. The 2.2 mile Annacis Island Line is considered a branch line of the Queensborough Line.

The Queensborough Line is part of BC Hydro Railway's Westminster Division.

History

The Queensborough Line was originally opened by the British Columbia Electric Railway (BCER) as a tram line from New Westminster's interurban station at the corner of Columbia Street at 8th Avenue. Tram service was discontinued in 1929, but the line has remained in use for freight service, and expanded considerably since then. Initially electrified at 600V DC, it was converted to the national standard 25kV 60Hz AC system in 1933. The BCER was nationalised in 1960, becoming the BC Hydro Railway.

Services

The extensive network of industrial trackage in Queensborough and on Annacis Island is collectively called the Queensborough-Annacis Industrial Area; many important industries are served here, including Fairey BC's floatplane factory (formerly De Havilland BC prior to DHBC's takeover by Boeing; thus the name of the Annacis Island yard, De Havilland), the Polysar BC plant, the Blue Circle Cement plant at Ewans Landing, the Dominion Fibre plant, Pacific Coast Terminal (which replaced the original location further upriver in 1979), the Fraser Ore Terminal, and numerous smaller industrial concerns which generate a great deal of traffic for the BCH.

Schoolhouse is named after a tram stop that had been located there.
