Fiji, officially the Dominion of Fiji (Fijian: Vanua o Viti, Fiji Hindi: फ़िजी अधिराज्य), is a sovereign island country in Oceania.
Fiji is one of the eighteen British Commonwealth Realms and thus a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. It is also a member of the United Nations and the Asia-Pacific Treaty Organisation.
History
- 1973: passing of the Commonwealth Realms Act in British Columbia, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Malta; other Realms passed this act in later years.
- 1987: coup d'etat results in declaration of Republic of Fiji; Commonwealth membership suspended.
- 1990: renamed Sovereign Democratic Republic of Fiji
- 1995: Constitutional crises lead to fall of government, constititutional amendments, and ultimately new elections.
- 1997: New constitution passed, monarchy restored and name returned to Dominion of Fiji; suspension of Commonwealth membership revoked.
