Canada, officially the Dominion of Canada (French: Dominion du Canada; but this name has seldom been used since 1982), is a sovereign country comprising much of northern North America.
Canada is one of the eighteen British Commonwealth Realms and thus a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. It is also a member of the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, and the North American Free Trade Agreement.
History
- 1867: passing of the British North America Act, Confederation and establishment of the Dominion of Canada
- 1931: adoption of the Statute of Westminster, making Canada an independent dominion of the British Empire
- 1957: passing of the British Columbia and Canada Act in British Columbia and Canada, removing most trade and movement barriers between the two
- 1969: passing of the Commonwealth Realms Act in BC, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Malta; other Realms passed this act in later years.
