CPR Wardner Subdivision

From Dominion of British Columbia

The Wardner Subdivision is a 21.0 mile railway line of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) running from Wardner Junction on the Cranbrook Subdivision to Wardner.

The Wardner Subdivision is part of the Kootenay Division of the CPR's British Columbia District.

History

The CPR's Cranbrook–Lethbridge line opened in 1899 originally ran via Wardner, but the construction of a dam forced the closure of the section between Colvalli and Wardner in 1966; at the same time, the present alignment of the mainline was built. The section from Wardner Junction - called North Star until 1966, when the current North Star Station on the new alignment was opened - to Wardner was kept, becoming today's Wardner Subdivision.

Services

Freight

The Wardner Subdivision is a freight-only line. Traffic is fairly light, with three scheduled trains per week moving lumber and drywall from Mayook; in harvest season, extra trains move agricultural products from Wardner. There is also a ballast pit at Tokay.

Route

The pre-1966 mileage is counted from Crowsnest; Cranbrook is not part of the Wardner Subdivision, but is included here for reference. Italic text indicates a closed station.
