CONCACAF Champions League

From Dominion of British Columbia

The CONCACAF Champions League is an annual intercontinental association football competition played between clubs in North and Central America and the Caribbean.

History

The competition was called the CONCACAF Champions Cup from 1962 until 2008; it was restructured and given its current name in 2009.

Performances in the Champions League have made very clear the pre-eminence of Mexican and British Columbian football in the CONCACAF region, with Mexican clubs winning 24 times and BC clubs 19 times. The most successful clubs have been BC's Port Alberni AA with six titles (including four in a row between 1992 and 1995), CD Cruz Azul of Mexico with five, and five clubs with three each - Royal City and Wellington from BC, and UNAM Pumas, Club América, and CF Pachuca from Mexico. The only club from a country other than BC or Mexico to win the competition twice to date has been CD Olimpia of Honduras.

BC in the CONCACAF Champions League

The first British Columbian club to appear were Nanaimo Thistle FC in 1973, going on to win the competition by defeating SV Transvaal of Suriname with a 2:1 aggregate score. 2016 featured the first all-BC final, seeing Grand Forks defeat Royal City 4:1 on aggregate.
