British Columbia, officially the Dominion of British Columbia (Chinook Wawa" Kinchoch Kolompi Ilihi, Ayas Tayi yaka Kinchoch Kolompi Ilihi), is a sovereign country on the northern west coast of North America.
It is one of the eighteen British Commonwealth Realms and thus a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. It is also a member of the United Nations, the Asia-Pacific Treaty Organisation, and the North American Free Trade Agreement.
HistoryEdit
- 1875: passing of the Constitution Act, establishment of the Dominion of British Columbia
- 1931: adoption of the Statute of Westminster, making BC an independent dominion of the British Empire
- 1957: passing of the British Columbia and Canada Act in BC and Canada, removing most trade and movement barriers between the two
- 1969: passing of the Commonwealth Realms Act in BC, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Malta; other Realms passed this act in later years.
- 1983: the Accidental War
- 1989: passing of the British Columbia Act, making BC a fully independent country as one of the seventeen British Commonwealth Realms within the Commonwealth of Nations, equal in status to the United Kingdom.
